Plasma‐catalytic Ammonia Synthesis via Eley‐Rideal Reactions: a Kinetic Analysis

Abstract The reaction mechanism of plasma‐catalytic ammonia synthesis is not fully understood. MgO supported Ru, Co, Pt, Pd, Cu and Ag catalysts are tested in a DBD plasma at temperature between room 500 °C power 3.8 W 6.4 W. resulting production the presence catalyst can be distinguished into (1) temperature‐independent plasma‐based synthesis, (2) temperature‐dependent synthesis. Turn‐over‐frequencies (TOF) calculated based on rate second pathway chemisorption data, measuring number active sites. Underestimation TOFs caused by decomposition was minimized using exclusively observations low concentration. kinetic results suggest that Eley‐Rideal N radicals from with chemisorbed H atoms rate‐determining step for Ru/MgO, Co/MgO, Pt/MgO, Pd/MgO, Cu/MgO, apparent activation barriers range 18–24 kJ mol −1 . In contrast, barrier Ag/MgO significant higher 30 , suggesting shift determining step. coverage may induce to Langmuir‐Hinshelwood pathway, via adsorption metal surface.
